There are now no less than three "independent discussion groups" for Peak
Rail. At this rate there'll soon be a discussion group for every mile of
track:
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/peakrail-enthusiasts/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Peakrailgossip/

(I'm thinking of starting a discussion group to discuss the proliferation of
discussion groups dedicated to this line...)
The 2010 Historic Railway Walks of Rowsley will be held on:
Saturday 24th April
Saturday 15th May
Wednesday 9th June
Wednesday 21st July
Wednesday 11th August
Wednesday 1st September
Saturday 2nd October
The walks, which start from Rowsley Old Station at 10.30am, take
approximately 3 hours (with stops for explanation) and cover a distance
of 2 miles. Refreshments will be available at Rowsley South station at
the end and there is also the opportunity to travel on Peak Rail trains.
There will be a cost of 3.00 for the walks, for which you will also
receive an illustrated tour guide. It is advised that you book in
advance - details here:

There is some debate as to whether the locomotive "Hogwarts Castle", which features
at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Universal Studios, Orlando) is the "real" one
(actually 4952 "Olton Hall") shipped out from the UK, or a locally-made replica. I
can't yet find pictures of the actual loco 'in situ' on the Internet, but it can be
seen in the advert here:

Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup
London Underground
Ongoing engineering work means that the Jubilee Line will close down
completely over the Easter weekend and will fully reopen in October 2010.
On the Northern Line long sections will be closed for 65 weekends between
March 2010 and November 2011.
Birmingham
The City Council has approved Network Rail's 600m Gateway project to
redevelop New Street station. Phase 1, a new concourse built on the
former car park, should open in 2012. Phase 2 will involve the
redevelopment of the existing concourse with all works expected to be
completed by 2015.
http://www.newstreetnewstart.co.uk/
Cambridge
The station has longest platform in the country but (apart from a brief
period in the mid-19th century) it was never supplemented by another
through platform. It is used by trains travelling north and south and,
although it has a central scissor crossing, it is the cause of congestion.
Work on providing an island platform is due to start in January 2011, and
be completed within 12 months.
Bluebell Railway
The heritage railway has signed an agreement with GBRf, Land & Water
(waste operators) and Network Rail for the removal of Imberhorne Tip.
Daily trains will start running in March with the spoil being taken to a
waste site at Appleford north of Didcot. A formal opening of East
Grinstead station will take place on 5th/6th June 2010 with passenger
shuttles running to the north end of the tip.
Bucks
Work began on Sunday 21st Feb on phase 1 of Chiltern Railways' Evergreen 3
project, a 250m upgrade that will slash journey times into London from
south Buckinghamshire.
http://www.chiltern-evergreen3.co.uk/
Tyne & Wear Metro
On 2nd February 2010 DB Regio Tyne & Wear Ltd signed a contract to operate
the network until 2017 on behalf of Nexus the regional transport
authority. The following day the Government confirmed a 580m funding
package.
Ireland's Western Rail Corridor
Iarnrd ireann has confirmed that, following an inauguration ceremony the
previous day, passenger services between the cities of Limerick and Galway
will resume on 30th March 2010.
USA
The Alaska Railroad Corp. and a private railroad safety group have agreed
on a route to move railroad track south toward the Tanana River.
http://newsminer.com/bookmark/6414369
Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's NIS 51 billion Israel Transportation
plan for a network of highways and railroads has been halved. Cuts
include the railway lines to Eilat and Kiryat Shmona.
http://www.globes.co.il/serveen/globes/docview.asp?did=1000541412&fid=942
Germany
Some services on the Harz narrow gauge system (HSB) will be steam-hauled
on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in 2010.
Spain
A new large station is being constructed at Malaga Airport to replace the
two existing ones. It is the intention that all services to Malaga will
be extended to the airport. Existing services in Malaga, as in most
places elsewhere in Spain, are being maintained despite work taking place
on the new high speed network.
